Aspen Holdings controlled FirstComp Insurance Co., a carrier of workers’ compensation policies for small businesses. Beginning with its launch in 1997, FirstComp built out a network of more than 8,300 independent insurance agencies in small towns and rural areas not otherwise targeted by workers’ compensation carriers. In 2010, Markel Corp. (Nyse: MKL) acquired FirstComp.
